Google, The Great Resignation, and you will find countless articles and news stories. In short, the Great Resignation is the phenomenon of many workers leaving their jobs during the COVID-19 pandemic. This phenomenon is not only a United States problem, but also being felt around the world. And it is affecting virtually every industry and type of job. Many organizations are struggling to deal with the shortages of workers. As a result, experts say they should focus on employee retention policies and programs. As a VCIO, I have some thoughts about this approach and the Great Resignation’s impact on IT in general.
Your Team
Your company can be impacted in two ways. One, perhaps key member of your internal IT team has left your company. Based upon the statistics, chances are that you will lose somebody – if you already have not. Finding suitable replacements can take time, leaving a gap in your IT needs. Consequently, this can disrupt the operations of your business. Two, to mitigate the risk, you should take a holistic look at your organization’s entire IT function. One of the main reasons for the Great Resignation is the discontent of employees and a lack of appreciation. Therefore, do you know the level of satisfaction of your IT team members? Do you have policies and procedures in place to address any issues? Are you focused on the retention of key employees? Your first client is actually your team and they need love and attention as well.
The Fix
With all my experience in starting and operating technology companies, I have learned how to address these problems. In my role as a VCIO, I work with senior management to ensure the company’s entire IT function works well. This includes not only hardware and software but people and process as well. I develop training and retention programs, assist with building an effective team, and increase employee productivity. I also could fill the gap if you lost significant members of your team.
