Technology, its terms and concepts, is very confusing and overwhelming to business owners and leaders. Therefore, they hate dealing with and leave it to IT professionals. When I am asked, Steve, what do you do? I see eyes gloss over and clear confusion on the face of the inquisitor. It really is not that complicated. In short, I do three things:
- I save money for companies.
- I make sure businesses have the right technology to run smoothly.
- And I look out for my clients.
Does this help? Let me explain further.
Saving Money
When it comes to technology, business owners and leaders often do not know what they are paying for or if they are getting a fair price. They may be paying for technology that they are not using anymore. Further, they may be spending for too many users of a particular service or product. I review invoices, contracts, and needs. From that, I decide if the client is indeed overpaying for technology. As an example, I recently saved a client around $1500.00 per month when I found they were overpaying for IT support.
Technology Needs
Companies will often hire an IT company to come in and set up its computers. They also handle the software on these computers. Lastly, they will provide support to the company’s computer users. Some of these companies are really good, some are not. That said, most do not take the time to fully understand the company’s core business and goals. I offer a unique perspective. I learn the business and I implement technology systems to help the company reach its goals. For example, I recently did a technology analysis for a company that has significant growth plans. I found that their current systems would not allow for growth. While I could get into the weeds of what I recommended, I will spare you all that tech-jargon.
Have Your Back
I often serve as an outsourced Chief Information Officer or CIO. So what? you may be thinking. As a CIO, I can handle both above categories to ensure that the company’s needs are the focus – not the vendor’s. I am an independent resource. This means that I do not make more money by selling unnecessary products and services. In this role, I am like a member of the organization’s management team. I can explain technology in language they understand. This helps management to make sound business decisions and investments about technology.
So, there you have it. Next time I get asked – Steve, what do you do? – I am going to print this. Seriously, I hope this blog makes it clear. If not, call me as I would be happy to give you a 1 hour free consultation.
